Landscaping For Spring

Landscaping our front yard is something that we’ve had on our priority list for some time, but the budget just wouldn’t allow it. Well thanks to the NC historic preservation tax credits, we can finally afford to get it done! And just in time for spring!

If you go all the way back to when we started, this is our before shot.

We’ve slowly been making progress, and last August this was our view.

A lot better, but the little sprigs in the front are pretty embarrassing. Charles painted the foundation a while back, and a few weeks ago, we got new landscaping.

Although it doesn’t look nearly as green in these photos, we are so happy with the results! I can’t wait for these little baby shrubs to grow and continue to add to our curb appeal.

While they were at it, we had the landscapers reshape our driveway to make it wider so that we can fit two cars side by side. We basically had a sand pit under the carport, so I’m glad to have that gone!

We’ve got several more long-term plans for the landscape and driveway, but that’s a post for another day. Right now, we are just enjoying our new landscaping and feeling excited for spring!

What changes are you making for spring?

Kitchen Renovation Plans

Did you catch the sneak peek of our very unsightly kitchen counters yesterday? Our kitchen is a far cry from the state we found it in, but overall, it needs to be gutted. We decided to add our master bathroom instead of renovating the kitchen, and it was the right choice. Our kitchen is totally functionally, just not all that attractive. And since we plan to renovate in 5 years or so, we agreed to not spend much in this space until that time. No use in paying for a band-aid if you don’t have to, right?

IMG_5420 IMG_5421 IMG_5830

I’d love to tell you that I have something totally original and really creative in mind for our kitchen. But the truth is, I just love an all-white kitchen! I always have.

The biggest goals for the aesthetic of our kitchen: classic, sophisticated, and most of all, clean. Given the size of our house, the kitchen is actually fairly small. My ultimate goal is to install cabinets all the way around the room and add a large island with a breakfast bar. There’s really not room in the kitchen for a dining table AND work space, so that seems like the best option.

There’s a million little things I want…a hidden compartment for our everyday appliances (microwave, Keurig, etc.), under-cabinet lighting, a wine fridge, a baseboard vacuum (seriously), a window seat, a double dishwasher, and pull out drawers.  That list could go on forever, so I’ve narrowed it down to 6 things that are at the top of my list. (Click on photos for source.)

I know that white can be a risky choice, but I don’t care. I definitely consider the style of our home to be classic…traditional…timeless. That’s the goal. So knowing that our kitchen won’t go out of style is key. I found this countertop material at Lowe’s a while back and have kept it on my “house list” for well over a year. When the time comes, it will be hard to convince me not to go with this one.

One of the perks of our house is our tall ceilings, so I think we should capitalize on that real estate up top! While I love the look of glass-front cabinets in many kitchens I see, I just know that the visible clutter would drive me crazy. But I like the idea of smaller glass-front cabinets up top.

When we were still living in a city over two hours away and working on this restoration project long-distance, Charles found a Jenn-Air gas range in great condition for $80 on Craigslist. It very well may be our favorite thing in the house (besides our bathroom!). It’s nothing special really, but I loooooove cooking with gas. I don’t think I could ever go back at this point. One thing I’d like to do when we renovate is install a new down-draft gas range in the center island. Right now our range is in the corner and I always feel like I’m being punished when I cook. Not cool.

We currently have one wall oven and, just like the gas range, I don’t think I could ever go back. I love that the oven is at eye level, and that I don’t have to bend awkwardly to try to maneuver heavy casserole dishes out of there. It’s just so convenient. The only problem is that it’s only 27 inches, so I’d like to add another for added cooking space. The cabinets above and below our current oven are already conducive to adding a second oven, so that’s a plus.

I’m a clumsy person. It’s ok, I can admit it. I am always dropping stuff (side note: almost dropped a steak knife right into my foot yesterday…it was a close call), so the idea of having tile in the kitchen just scares the crap out of me. I know there’s lots of durable alternatives out there, but I figure we’ve got hardwoods in the whole house so why not continue the trend to the kitchen. Plus, in an all-white kitchen, I think hardwoods can really pop and be a feature. I’d love to do the herringbone pattern above!

Like most of our kitchen, our current food storage setup is functional but unattractive. We’re using an old Ikea bookcase with fabric cubes as a pantry. It gets the job done, but I’m sure there’s cans in the bottom of one cube that will never be touched because I can’t see them. I’d like to have a built in pantry with slide-out drawers so I can see all the noms at any give time.

And that’s it. That’s the very top of my lengthy kitchen wish list. You can find more of my kitchen inspiration here.

What’s on your wish list? Any past reno experiences you’d like to share?

The Herring Hulse Designer Showcase Home

Those of you that know me know that I can’t sit still for long. I like to cram my plate as full as possible. It’s just my nature…I’m happiest when I’m the busiest.

So today I’d like to introduce you to my latest project: The Herring Hulse Designer Showcase Home. Basically, we’re taking a run-down historic home in downtown Goldsboro, NC and transforming it into something beautiful, which will be on display later this Spring. The Designer Home will feature not only the work of talented designers from across the state, including Pottery Barn, Ethan Allen, and Ferguson Bath, but also florists, landscape architects, and gardeners. (To clarify, I’m no designer, nor do I pretend to be…I’ll be heading up the marketing efforts and coordinating volunteers for this project.)

The Herring-Hulse Designer Showcase Home sits proudly in the heart of historic downtown Goldsboro. The two-story Williamsburg-style house, built in 1944, boasts 3,800 square feet and has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. Other rooms in the Designer Home to include the kitchen, dining room, family room, breakfast room, playroom, study, laundry room, and side porch.

Finishing Touches on the Master Bathroom

If you tuned in for the blog hop yesterday, you got a sneak peek of our updated bathroom vanity. It’s been a while since I shared our master bathroom renovation; it seems like we’ve had this room 90% finished for so long, and we just finally pulled it together about a week ago.

First, we finally put on that vanity hardware we’ve had for months. I love the way that this bathroom brings modern and traditional together, and the hardware definitely leans towards the modern.

IMG_6295 IMG_6294 IMG_6293 IMG_6288

Another one of those “we’ve had this for months but haven’t done anything with it” items is the overhead light. Charles picked this out a few months back because it matched our vanity lighting and we just wanted the room completed, but I’ve stalled because I’m honestly not that crazy about it.

I admit that it looks a hundred times better than I had planned (and it’s WAY better than this), but I still see this one as an interim fixture. Eventually I’d like something more like this or this.

IMG_6275

We also added some towel hooks. It’s exciting, I know.

IMG_6277 IMG_6280 IMG_6281

Charles also installed a new rain shower head. Well, new to this house. It was one that we had in our first apartment after we got married. It’s nice to finally hop in the shower and not be cold on whichever side wasn’t directly under the water.

IMG_6274 IMG_6286 IMG_6287

This last update probably seems pretty silly, but I’m in love with our new bathtub caddy tray. I’ve never been a huge bath person, but I got some bath bombs for Christmas and figured I’d give it a shot. I’ve been converted! I mean, there’s even a wine glass holder on this thing. How could I not love it?!

IMG_6272 IMG_6285 IMG_6271

It’s crazy to think that when I browse my bathroom board on Pinterest, I’m reminded of our bathroom in many of the photos. I still have to pinch myself every now and then…sometimes it’s hard to believe we actually get to live here. We are so blessed.

Alright, enough with the mush. What do you think?!

Guest Bedroom Update

We finally got around to finishing our second guest bedroom last week. It only took us 9 months.

When we started our restoration, that guest bedroom (called the Bear Room) looked like this.

IMG_2688 IMG_3378

Then, after a lot of work and A LOT of plaster repair, it looked like this.

IMG_4152 IMG_4153 IMG_4154 IMG_4155

And then we moved all of our stuff, and this room became the dumping grounds of the house.

IMG_5521 IMG_5522 IMG_5523

Trust me, it got even worse than that.

Over Christmas break and MLK weekend, we worked really hard to get this room back in shape. We officially unpacked our last box on Monday, January 19, 2015!

And now, it looks like this.

IMG_6252 IMG_6253 IMG_6256 IMG_6258 IMG_6259 IMG_6260 IMG_6261 IMG_6262 IMG_6263 IMG_6264 IMG_6265

There’s still a few things that need to change. For one, the bed is a double and the Trina Turk comforter is a queen. We just threw it on there because we had it, but I think I want a white quilt/coverlet instead. It’s impossible to find non-custom drapes that are long enough for our 9′ tall windows, so I think I’ll end up adding a colorblock panel to the ends of these. And we desperately need a rug. But all in all, this room has come a very long way and I’m happy to finally be out from under the black cloud that was the room full of boxes!

This was a huge project. I recommend talking to professionals if you are considering any kind of home remodels such as this one – especially when the project is as extensive as  this one! SHS Roofing says, “When planning a home remodel, speak with the contractor during all phases of the process. Communication is critical in order to keep tabs on exactly what is happening during a remodel.”

A few sources… the paint color is Fresh Cut by Glidden. The bed is a hand-me-down. The dresser is a ReStore find that I refurbished. The nightstand is actually 2 accent tables from Target, on clearance for $6.49 each. The curtains are from TJ Maxx. The lamp was a yard sale find. All of the photos are ones I took on our honeymoon. The monogram canvas was a gift from my cousin Mary. And just about everything else can be found in my shop, including the brass etagere
