Happiness

Since I started blogging myself, I’ve kind of become enamored with the whole idea.  I have a bunch of blogs that I follow regularly, and I’ve found that I’m constantly enlightened and inspired by these talented writers.  Last week, Erin from House of Earnest posted on the importance of being happy right now.  For some reason, it really spoke to me.  I’ve been struggling with patience on this house project.  I’m so excited and ready, and it’s hard to not get frustrated sometimes when progress slows down.  Her words were just what I needed to realize that being happy with this stage doesn’t make the future any less exciting.  It just means that I get to enjoy BOTH the now and the later!  Just some food for thought.  Have a splendid day!

Summer Bucket List

I think the proverbial bucket is full this summer!  Between moving, my new job, Charles taking the bar exam, my new business venture, and oh yeah, restoring a 111-year-old house, I think we have our hands full.  But if you know anything about me, you know I love making lists, so I thought this would be a great one to hold onto for next summer!

summer

1.  Have drinks on the porch regularly.

2. Spend more time at the pool and/or beach.

3. Go on an “anniversary” trip with our friends…I’m thinking Caribbean.

4. Host a big backyard party.

5. Go to at least one concert.

6. Go camping.

7.  Grill often.

8.  Pick one room in the house and finish is completely.

9.  Learn to garden.

10.  Make homemade ice cream.

11.  Throw Charles a spectacular 30th birthday party.

What’s on your summer list?

Reminiscing

Charles and I have been married almost a year!  July 28 is our anniversary, and in light of the upcoming date, I thought I’d share a few (okay…a lot) of my favorite moments from our wedding weekend.

1.  Charles and I were completely surrounded the entire weekend by our most favorite people. I’ve never felt so loved in all my life.  I can’t imagine us doing any of it without all of them!!

2.  While taking pictures before the ceremony, my bridesmaids started singing “Let’s Get Married” by Jagged Edge (which I had not heard since middle school) and dancing.  You know the one…”Meet me at the altar in  your white dress.  We ain’t getting no younger, we might as well do it.”  Good times.

3.  I don’t have a picture of this one, but it’s at the very top of my list…my great friend, Jenni, who I’ve known since Kindergarten (and with whom there are wayyyyy too many memories and inside jokes to even begin) was of course a bridesmaid (she’s the one above on the far left).  The bridesmaids and I had about 5 minutes alone in the bridal room before we had to head to the sanctuary.  My mom had gone to be seated, our wedding director was out of the room, the photographers were getting into place.  It was just us.  And then Jenni grabbed my hand and asked if we could pray, and she said the sweetest prayer I’ve ever heard.  That was definitely one of the most special moments of the day.  Thank you, Jenni–I love you!

4. This picture.  From the day we got engaged, Charles and I both agreed on one word that we wanted our wedding to be: timeless.  I feel that this picture really captures that.

5.   This moment right before walking down the aisle.  My daddy looked at me and said, “Are you ready?”  And I said, “Let’s go!”  I’ve never been so sure and so steady in my whole life.

6.  The dancing!

7. Oh, remember that time the entire wedding reception sang Bohemian Rhapsody?  And Greg Stryker did a nasty air guitar solo?

Without a doubt the best day in my entire life.  I wish we could do it all again!!  (Without all the money and all the planning.)  Here’s hoping we look like this in 30 years:

Making Room on My Plate

As if there wasn’t already enough going on in my life, I’ve decided to take on a business venture!  My cousin-in-law, Mary, and I are opening The Remedy House, an online (for now) shop in September.  We will have lots of vintage, custom, and handmade items–perfect for the home or for gifts!  We are also carrying Stella & Dot accessories, which is up and running already.  Like us on Facebook to get all the updates.

Inspiration

Sorry, but nothing new to report today.  The weekend, a contractor on vacation, and a very rainy Monday slowed down the progress a little.  But we are pushing forward.  I keep returning to this quote…

change1

In the meantime, I thought I’d give you a little insight into what inspires me when planning for this house.  As addictive as it is, Pinterest is a spectacular tool for conveying ideas.  I am no longer required to flip through magazines in the hopes that I will find something I can use as inspiration.  That’s not to say that I don’t still love magazines…I still have subscriptions to Martha Stewart Living, Real Simple, Southern Living, and Our State, and my mother-in-law lets me have her Traditional Home, Better Homes & Gardens, Veranda, and Southern Lady too!  (I’m kind of a magazine-aholic.)  But there’s just something about the convenience of being able to pull up an idea on the iPad really quick and show it to the contractor or the painter or my husband.

When it became apparent that we would be owners of the Park Avenue house, I started a Pinterest page that is solely for that purpose.  I only put pictures and ideas that I know could someday work in the house.  So no massive backyard terrace and pool.  No rustic country decor.  No guest house.  While I like all of these, they don’t fit the house, and I want more than anything to stay true to its character.   Here are some that really capture my style and my vision.

Since I started blogging, I have become obsessed with other blogs.  My favorite house blogs are Young House Love, La Dolce Vita, Making It Lovely, Emily Henderson, and Better After.  It’s interesting to me that my favorites represent such a wide variety of styles.  Some of those bloggers don’t share my tastes at all, but I still enjoy reading about what inspires them.  Without even knowing it, they have helped shape the ideas I have for my house…and I’m sure I’m only one of many!!
