What’s Your Fall Style?

Since it’s officially the first day of October and fall is upon us, I thought I’d talk a little bit about decorating for fall.  You’ve probably figured out by now that it is by far my favorite season, so I’m a little bummed that we don’t get to do any decorating this year.  But next  year…look out!!  We have 8 mantles and every last one of them is going to be decked out all season!!  Don’t worry, the porches, front door, dining room table, and bathrooms will be getting plenty of love too.  But first, I have to decide which direction I want to go in…

My first thought is to go with something a little more glamorous than just the usual sticks and leaves.  Here are a few that I love:

But then, there are lots of really lovely rustic set ups that I find just as pretty:

So I was of course overjoyed when I found this awesome blend of the two: A Rustic Glam Fall Mantle!

There’s still plenty of glitz in there, but it’s not overwhelming.  Here are a few other examples I found that mix glam and rustic beautifully:

Also worth checking out:  Melissa from The Inspired Room has been doing a Fall Nesting Series since the middle of September.  I’ve loved browsing her pictures.  Go take a peek for lots of fun tips and ideas!!

What’s your favorite fall decorating theme?  Are you more into the woodsy, rustic look…or do you like to doll it up a bit?  Have you found any inspiring ideas that mix the two?

The Story of Us, and a Little Hiatus

It’s come to my attention that I never told you the “story of us.” Let’s fix that…

During my freshman year of college, I was in the College of Textiles at NC State. As is tradition, a large group of us chartered a bus and headed down to Clemson to cheer on the Wolfpack in the Textile Bowl. After breakfast with Clemson’s textiles folks, we headed for Memorial Stadium (aka Death Valley). Well I must have just been way too eager, because I stepped off a curb wrong and turned my ankle in a super nasty sort of way.

Blog Milestone: 100th Post!!

It’s hard to believe that this first post was 100 posts ago!  It’s even harder to believe that there have been over 6,000 views since then!  To those seasoned bloggers this is probably about a days-worth of views, but as a new blogger, I’m happy with those results.  I feel very humbled that so many people are interested in our “little project.”  Thank you for reading and for all your support and feedback.  Keep it coming!!

I feel like I have learned so much through this process already…about myself, about blogging, about being a homeowner, about working with contractors, about restoring a very old house.  The list could go on and on.  Thanks for sharing in the experience with me!  Here’s to the next 100 posts! :)

PS- stay tuned for more updates later in the week.  The roofing, carpentry for the back porches, and bathroom reno are all getting started this week!!

How Can You Help?

In sticking with the theme of Liz’s guest post earlier today, I have a little challenge for you.  I think many of us can relate that our lives often seem centered around food.  Meals are a social event for most of us, not just a means of sustenance.  We gather in the kitchen, or around the table, and spend time enjoying one another.  Unfortunately, not everyone is so lucky.

Erin at House of Earnest posted an admirable call to action today on her blog.  As Erin noted, we all seem to be outspoken about the things we are thankful for around Thanksgiving, but it’s easy to lose sight of those things as the year passes on.  Now there’s a way for us to be reminded of what we have and what we are thankful for, all while helping a worthy cause.

Here’s the deets…Schwan’s food company is beginning it’s “Open the Door to Thankful” campaign today in an effort to help people realize all the things we each have to be thankful for.  Schwan’s has already agreed to donate 250,000 meals to Feeding America up front.  In addition, Schwan’s invites all of us to join in by sharing what we are thankful for on the drive’s Facebook page each #thankfulthursday through October 10.  For each post, Schwan’s will donate an additional 5 meals to Feeding America.

This really is such a simple way to make a difference.  Not only will participating in this campaign help feed those who are less fortunate, it may just help you too.  A little positivity and benevolence can go a long way!

What are you thankful for today?

To the Best People I Know…

Happy anniversary to the two people who didn’t have to tell me about love…they just lived it.  I love you, Mom and Dad, and I hope that my marriage looks a lot like yours in 31 years.
