To Paint or Not To Paint?

What’s your take on painted closets?  Our master closet is ready for paint, and I just can’t decide if I want to leave it white (as in a blank slate) or do something a little more bold, like one of these.

I’m still drawn to whites in the closet, but worry it might be a little boring.  But then I also worry about the light reflecting off painted walls and making clothes appear different than they actually are.  Is that just crazy talk?

We’ve decided to go with Benjamin Moore’s Palladian Blue in the master bedroom, which will look something like this:

So what do you think?  Paint the closets, or leave them white?  If I paint, what color?

TV in the Bedroom – Yay or Nay?

Lately, I’ve seen that this can be a pretty controversial topic.  And honestly, I’ve gone back and forth several times.

In theory, I would choose not to have a TV in the bedroom.  I always have had one until our most recent move, and I’ve learned to really love being able to unwind with a magazine or my iPad in bed before turning out the light.

But here’s my hang up.  I’m a scaredy cat!  I’ve lived by myself before and have never had a problem staying alone when Charles is out of town.  But it has proven impossible for me to just turn out the lights and go to sleep when I’m alone in the house.  I know it’s just in my head, but every little creak and moan sounds like footsteps or door-knocking.  (And you know that’s only going to get worse when we move into our 112-year-old house!)  Having the TV on, even on the lowest volume, just helps to drown that out.  Even though I know it’s a bad habit, I’ve never had trouble sleeping with the TV on when I’m alone.  Luckily Charles rarely has to travel for work, but it’s still something to think about.

I’ve read all of the articles, like this one, about why it’s a bad idea to have a TV in the bedroom, and I have to say–I agree.  But will I be able to get over my fear of strange noises when I’m alone?

(And before you say there’s ways to hide the TV…I’ve seen the options, and I really don’t want a big chunky piece of furniture in the room just for the sole purpose of hiding the TV!)

What’s your opinion?  Would you put a TV in the bedroom?

Colors That Say Something

When it comes to color choices in your home, do you buy into the meaning behind the colors, or just pick the prettiest one you see?

I recently found this chart outlining the psychology of color choices for your home and thought I would share it with you.

The-Psychology-of-Colour{via}

Have you ever read your horoscope? Or even a fortune cookie? Our minds have a great way of taking words that would otherwise be completely random and somehow making them fit into our lives.  I’ve always wondered how almost 600,000,000 people that share the same astrological sign could all have the same horoscope and it magically applies to them.  I think the key word is vague.  Keep these readings vague, and the reader will easily find a way to apply it.

So really, I think you could spin these color meanings into just about anything you want.  Lately, I’ve been loving greens, especially “foliage greens!”  Does this mean I’m fertile, healthy, and balanced? Not completely.  But it does symbolize new beginnings, so that seems appropriate.

We’ve also chosen a lot of pastels for the bedrooms in our house.  According to the chart, these colors give off calm and soothing feelings, which I think is fitting.

As far as the office, I think we’ve hit the nail on the head!  We’ve chosen a navy, which could mean confident, professional, and thought-provoking.  So you should probably expect a lot of ingenious thoughts and inventions to come out of this room. (Ha!)

What’s your take on the psychology of color?  What colors are you drawn to?  Do your favorite colors represent your personality?

A Hole-Free Christmas

If you have plaster walls like we do, you know that they don’t always love screws and nails.  A tiny hole in plaster can eventually turn into this if you’re not careful!

As someone who LOOOOVES Christmas (and tends to go overboard during the season), this could pose a very big problem.  I mean, we have eight (yes, EIGHT!) mantels to decorate!  So naturally I was excited to find this post on how to hang garland, wreaths, and other decorations without using nails.  Lots of great tips!

Painting for Guests

Remember when we picked out paint colors?  We liked most of them, but there were a few that just had to go!  We decided we loved the Fresh Cut in the guest room, but decided to skip it in the dining room.  The first guest room was painted last week, and I think it looks pretty darn good! (Keep in mind that the pictures don’t necessarily make it look exactly the same as in real life.)

With the white trim and fireplace, the pale green really just pops! Here are a few rooms that are my inspiration for a serene, luxurious guest room:

I’d love to do this chenille coverlet on a bed in there.  So simple, and easy to change out pillows with the seasons.  Plus, anything will go with ivory!  (I’ve already put it on my birthday/Christmas wish list!)

The next guest room is a different story.  We tried out (what we thought was) a very pale coral color, but it ended up being way to salmon-y!  It was pretty, but it was a little much for a bedroom.  Plus Charles hated it! So this weekend, Charles primed a few spots in the room and painted over it with Del Mar Shores, which is a pale yellow.  Here’s a look!

I’ve never been a big yellow fan, but this is a really pretty color.  It’s bright and cheery, and will look great with the green in the adjoining guest room (they share a pass-through closet).  Here are a few of my favorite ideas for this room:

The Craigslist Hunt

Sometimes I find myself trolling Craigslist just to be entertained.  You can find some pretty interesting posts out there.  My proudest Craigslist purchase was our authentic 1926 pedestal sink that I scored for $100 when we first got the house.  I was a little eager, since we hadn’t even closed, but that’s ok!

Yesterday, instead of looking at some of the bigger cities, like Raleigh, Greensboro, and Charlotte, where I know I can usually find a few good pieces, I trolled over to Eastern NC.  That’s right.  Down east has it’s own Craigslist.

Anyway, here are a few items I found, along with ideas of what I think you could do with them.

1Brocade and cherry accent chairs – $150 for the pair

00j0j_kQZyP9oKljS_600x450

I think these chairs would look super chic painted white and reupholstered with a fun fabric, like animal print or stripes.  The price would be right if you could use them as is, but the print isn’t really for me.  And let me tell you–reupholstering is ‘spensive!

2. King size brass bed– $350

00J0J_eWf8FaSgAlI_600x450

If I had any money or any place to store this, I would take it!  The bed looks great on its own (you know how much I love brass!), but I think painting it could take it a step further.

3. Hoosier cupboard – $425

00o0o_6y5tROmok2m_600x450

It’s overpriced, but I really like this for sentimental reasons…it brings back memories of an old red, white, and blue one we had growing up.  All this guy needs is a good coat of paint and maybe some new hardware!

4. Brass & enamel mid-century lamps – $95 for the pair

00g0g_f0SYghaWJ1H_600x450

I admit, these are some ugly lamps.  But they aren’t a total lost cause!  You could easily turn these around with some paint and new shades.  (Mary has a good tutorial for sprucing up boring lamps here.)  You could even to all funky with some teal and red if you wanted to!  But at $95, I think they’re too expensive for the work you’d have to put in them.

5.  Antique sofa – $125

00000_7jT61FQwjPE_600x450

This sofa has good bones, but needs to be reupholstered.  Luckily, the reupholstering wouldn’t be as difficult as if it was tufted, but it’s still going to cost you.  The finished product could be just gorgeous enough to convince me though (if I need another sofa!). Are you as in love with that green and gold as I am?!?!

What are your thoughts?  Would you buy any of these?  What’s your best ever Craigslist score?
