Boy Office or Girl Office?

In planning the decor of the office, I’ve been bouncing back and forth lately.  We painted the office navy and I love love love it!  Seriously.  If you’re on the fence about doing dark walls….just do it!

But now I can’t decide if we should go with our original plan of a masculine space or try to brighten it up to fit the rest of the house.  So I’ve come up with two plans.

The constants: the large antique desk, the navy walls, and the white trim.  Neither of us work at home, so the office is more for leisure than actual work…at least for now.

 Option 1:

Untitled #3

This was our original idea to make the office somewhat of a “man cave.”  We’ve discussed having lots of leather, wood, and animal accents.  I think an oriental rug would help to keep the room traditional like the rest of the house, but layering a hide would make it a little more contemporary.  The added color doesn’t hurt either.

 Option 2:

Untitled #4

This definitely makes for a brighter space than Option 1.  The white, mint, and gold accents would help to lighten up the dark walls.  The colors would also tie in well with the rest of the house.  But it’s quite feminine, and nothing like what we had imagined.

So what’s your opinion?  Dark and masculine, or bright and feminine?

In Search Of

I’m on the hunt for the perfect table for our foyer.  Our foyer is quite substantial, and the previous owners even used it as a den.  The exact dimensions are 13′ x 21.5′.

Here’s a look at the room, in various stages.

And before you ask, we’re not sure if that rug is staying or going to live in another room.  It really just depends on how this room takes shape.  But the foyer was the only place clear enough to let it flatten out.

Charles and I both would like to put a large table in the middle of the room, with a few other pieces of occasional furniture sprinkled in here and there.  Maybe something like these.

As you can imagine as we near the end of our restoration, our furniture budget is pretty tight.  I’ve been scouring Craigslist and Facebook furniture pages for the right table, but no luck.  We don’t want just a round table that looks like the typical round dining table at your grandmother’s house.  It needs to feel special in some way…just like our house!

So if you come across one, give me a shout! :)

Just Pining

As we get closer to the end of this project, our wallets get slimmer and slimmer.  So for the time being, I’ll just have to pine for the things I love, and know that we have years and years to shop for our “forever home.”

Here’s what I’m dying for right now.  By the way, I already have 3 sofas and a settee…I think if I could afford (and had the space for) a fetish, it would be sofas.  If you’re gonna dream, dream big, right?!

Wish List 3/14

1. Horchow “Lexington” Fireplace Screen – $296 (on sale!) – This would look so glamorous in our pink formal living room with all the other gold accents!

2. Anthropologie Linen Ditte Sofa – $3,898 – I have no idea where I would put this, but if someone just gave it to me, I would not turn it away.

3. Dwell Studio Dunham Floor Lamp – $1,260 – Classic and chic. Period.

4. Threshold Tufted Bench – $80 – Why are these only available in stores, and nowhere near me?!?

5. Arianna Belle Les Touches Pillow – $78 – This would seriously go with anything!

6. Eames Chair and Ottoman – $4,129 – Wouldn’t this look spectacular in our navy office?

7. Glamorous Rooms by Jan Showers – $50 – You can read more about my coffee table book must haves here.

8. Art by Christina Baker – $1,150 – Every day I love abstracts more and more, and these colors are so vibrant.

9. Z Gallerie Solaris Dinnerware – $52 to $80 – I mean really, who wouldn’t want to eat off these?  Plus they’re my favorite color!

What are you pining for lately?

A Little Shopping

I hope y’all had a wonderful weekend!  We headed to the beach, expecting some cold and rainy weather, and it turned out to be beautiful!  60s and sunny! It was definitely just what the doctor ordered.  But we’re supposed to get hit with another ice/snow storm this afternoon.  Go home Mother Nature…you’re drunk.

While at the beach, we hit up a few antique and consignment shops.  I decided against the faux wood Draper dresser.  There’s nothing wrong with faux wood, but the drawers just felt a little flimsy.  There will be others!

I also fell in love with this midcentury modern orange sectional.  It doesn’t go with our house at all, and modern usually isn’t my style, but it was so pretty! And such a good price!

Where to Invest

Have you ever wondered which pieces in your home you should save on, and which you should splurge on?  In fashion, they always say to invest in the basics…a little black dress, work staples, black pumps, etc…and avoid splurging too much on the trendy stuff.  So is it the same when it comes to home decor?

In this post, designer Alexandra answers that question.  She suggests you splurge on your sofa in the living room, window treatments in the bedroom, and chairs in the dining room.

So far, our biggest decor splurges are (or will be) the wallpaper in the dining room, our window treatments, a new basket chandelier in the foyer, and our master bathroom.

Are there pieces you splurged on invested in in your home?  Where did you really try to cut corners?

Coffee Table Book Love

I’ve never been an avid reader.  I’m envious of the people that can sit down and finish (and enjoy!) a book, but I’m just not one of them.

That’s why I love coffee table books!  I even have a Pinterest board dedicated to this love.  I can sit and go through every page, or thumb through as I have the time and patience.  Plus, we all know how easy it is to style with books!

I’m ashamed to say that the only one of these I have in my collection is Design Sponge.  But you have to start somewhere, right?

What are some of your favorite coffee table books?  Do you have a good collection going?
