Formal & Feminine

Y’all, this formal living room is driving me crazy.  I am having a serious love-hate relationship with the thing.  All I know is this current furniture layout has just got to go.

(Please ignore the clutter around the piano…this room is also serving as inventory storage until the garage is fixed!)

The main problem?  No more money.  So we are basically working with what we have. But I’m up for the challenge!

This is the basic layout of the room:  (thanks to Haverty’s Room Planner)

FLR Blank

As you can see, we have a large bay window in the front of the house, and one window along the side.  There are two doors and a fireplace on the wall adjacent to the foyer, and one door on the wall adjacent to the mud room.  The room is approximately 17 feet long by 13 feet wide.

This is how we have it arranged now:

FLR Current

It is more of a “throw everything in there” style than anything else, and I kind of hate it.  I love the piano because of the sentimental value, but it is really ruining this room for me.  But it can’t really go anywhere else in the house, and I cringe to think about how hard it would be to move it further than a few feet. (Plus, when I think about what the guys did to get the piano in the house, I feel like a total jerk.)

The things I love in the room:

  1. The pale pink color of the walls with the bright white trim
  2. The fireplace
  3. The pink sofa
  4. The rug (It’s not a forever rug, but it fills the space nicely right now. Plus it was a steal!)
  5. My grandmother’s framed scarf

IMG_5413

My goal is to pull the colors from the scarf to use throughout the room: teal, navy, white, gold, and pink.

The things that need to go:

  1. The piano
  2. The green wingback chairs

My dad generously gave us the wingback chairs from his office that are in perfect condition. I have plans to recover them, but that’s not in the cards right now and the green just isn’t working in here.  Up to the office they go!

So what am I looking for?  Well first, let’s talk about the general feel of the room. I want it to feel soft, sweet, feminine, and traditional with a hint of modern.  These rooms capture what I’m going for.  (Click on images for source.)

Now, for the layout.  I really think the best option is to stick a coffee table or ottoman in the center of the room, and then set two sofas or a sofa and set of chairs on either side.  When it comes down to it, I’m a Type A, right angles kind of girl, and I know I’ll be happier with that set up. From there, I just have to decide which way to turn everything.

We don’t have two chairs that would fit into the scheme of the room (without reupholstering — aka $$$), but we do have access to a very traditional pale blue couch that might be a nice touch.

The only problem with all this floating furniture is that I still need things to fill some wall space.  But I think I would be happier living with a few bare walls than I am with random pieces just thrown haphazardly into a room.

What do you think? How would you arrange this room?

Staying At The Open

The US Open has officially begun in Pinehurst, NC.  Practice rounds are under way, and the official tournament will start on Thursday. I have to admit, I’ve never really been able to get into golf, but since I grew up less than 30 miles from this year’s course, I’m a little more interested than usual.

But you know I’m not here to talk about golf.  Let’s talk about what really matters: the accommodations!

Pinehurst is known for The Pinehurst Resort, or The Village, which consists of a few inns, restaurants, a spa, a golf course, shops, etc.

The Carolina Hotel is the largest hotel located in the resort.  It opened in 1901 and is often called the “Queen of the South.”  The hotel has 230 Four-Diamond guest rooms and suites, and everything just screams luxury.  If you’re feeling extra fancy, you can even enjoy afternoon tea.

The Carolina Hotel also has a restaurant, The Carolina Dining Room.  I remember going here as a kid on special occasions for the “champagne brunch.” It was always fantastic! In my opinion, the regular guest rooms are nothing to write home about, but the presidential suite is just stunning.  I’m absolutely in love with the color of the trim.

The Holly Inn was built in 1895 (Pinehurst’s first hotel) and is located in the heart of The Village. This Four Diamond hotel has 82 guest rooms and suites that are each unique.  Every nook and cranny of this hotel is decorated exquisitely to take you back in time. The 1895 Grille, a 4-star restaurant, is also located in The Holly, and The Tavern holds an antique bar brought all the way from Scotland.

The Manor Inn is the smallest and most intimate of the inns at the resort.  It was built in 1923 and features 42 guest rooms.  Visitors often say the hotel feels like a sportsman’s lodge, and it is one of Arnold Palmer’s favorite spots.  The rooms are modestly decorated, but you can expect 5-star hospitality out of this one.

A New Colorful Fridge

Several months ago, we bought this GE Profile counter-depth refrigerator.  We actually ordered it from the Sears Outlet (it’s no longer available there) and got well over half off for a “ding” in the side that we honestly can’t even find. (PS- I would totally recommend shopping online for appliances at the Sears Outlet…we had a fantastic experience!)

We have been absolutely in love with the fridge since we got it, but like any fridge, it requires a lot of cleaning to avoid bad stains and smells.  Enter: the Fridge Coaster!

These adorable coasters come in lots of cute patterns, and make so much sense.  They are made of wood pulp and help to absorb drips, spills, and smells to keep your fridge looking and smelling fresh.

Here’s our pretty but boring fridge before.

And now, it’s super fun and organized!

IMG_5606 IMG_5589 IMG_5588 IMG_5596 IMG_5597 IMG_5604 IMG_5608 IMG_5587 IMG_5590

My favorite things about the Fridge Coasters:

1.  They are eco-friendly (100% biodegradable) and can actually keep your produce fresher longer, thanks to the wood pulp that creates a breathable barrier.

IMG_5598

2.  You can customize them easily. Each coaster is perforated to allow you to fit it to your fridge. Since we have a counter-depth fridge, I was concerned that none of the coasters would fit, but they actually worked quite nicely.  I did have a little trouble fitting one door coaster in, but I just snipped away a couple of edges and it worked perfectly!  I even overlapped a couple to make them fit in the fruit drawer, and that works just fine too.

IMG_5585 IMG_5603

3.  They come in really fun colors! Who wouldn’t love to open their fridge and see a little pizazz?!

IMG_5574

4. And my absolute favorite part…no more cleaning! The coasters lock in drips and spills and dries extremely fast, so you don’t need to constantly wipe down your fridge and you can avoid nasty smells.  (Note: Fridge Coaster suggests that you change out the coasters every 4-6 months.)

Aren’t these rooms just stunning?!

In addition to these designers, there were 84 designers that joined in the linkup challenge. These rooms are seriously fantastic…I’d love to join in next year and tackle one of my rooms.  Hmm, where should I start?!

I also couldn’t help but notice that there was a pretty prevalent blue and white theme running through many of these rooms. (Click on photo for source.)

Blue and white is such a classic, timeless combination, and I don’t see it going out of style any time soon!

A Vibrant English Country Home

With all this weather we’ve been having here in eastern NC and the official move into our house a couple weeks ago, my internet access at home has been somewhat limited.  So I haven’t been able to upload and edit as many pictures as I’d like.  Bear with me, and I’ll be back soon to resume the Room by Room Recap series.

Today, I wanted to share one of my absolute favorite interiors.  To be honest, English Country (and French Country and Country Country for that matter) isn’t really my style.  But there’s something about the way this designer marries a bit of English with a bit of Country with a whole lot of elegance!

Gorgeous, right?!  That foyer….I want it!  I love the use of vibrant colors that don’t overwhelm.  It’s just the perfect balance.

For those of you wondering…No, I don’t speak Spanish.  I found this house in a post by one of my very favorite blogs, House of Turquoise.  If you don’t follow Erin’s blog, you really should.  The interiors and exteriors that she features are nothing but stunning!!

Lately

I feel like I’ve been going a hundred miles a minute for the past few months, and a lot has been accomplished.  Today I thought I would update you on a few shopping trips and some progress we’ve made.

I took a quick 30-minute trip to the antique mall in my hometown last Thursday, and was pleasantly surprised.  It made me wish I had longer to spend in there…but it’s probably good I didn’t!  I fell in love with this large brass table, but decided to pass. (Ignore the chair sitting on top.)

I did pick up this funky lamp, as well as a vintage mirrored tray with lucite handles and a set of 4 espresso cups and saucers.  Not bad for about 20 minutes of browsing.

And here are a few other vintage finds I was digging.  Notice the tempting prices!

After a couple appointments, my mom and I hit HomeGoods and Steinmart for a bit of splurge shopping.  HomeGoods was great for finding large objects to fill in empty corners in the house.  Doesn’t this tall blue vase look great next to the mud room unit my dad built?

mud room

I also picked up this short and stubby jug.  I’m not sure if I’ll keep it in the den or not, but for right now it’s filling up a very sad and empty corner.  (Also, I hate that lamp and it is definitely going…just as soon as we can find a replacement!)

corner

I got a couple of these wooden placemats to try out above the mantel in the den, and I really like them.  I think I’ll get a few more and hang them above the mantel.

Another awesome HomeGoods find was this table runner.  It’s so bright and cheery! We have decided to wait on the wallpaper and go ahead and paint the dining room, so I’m hoping to pull a color from this runner.  I also picked up the matching tablecloth so that we can make some pillows.

I also eyed these two gorgeous paintings for quite some time at Steinmart.  They were both huge…about 2′ x 4’…and the prices were great, but I just wasn’t sure where they would go.

I’ve been loving our camellia bush lately.  I keep snipping buds and placing them around the house.  Everything just seems so much more put together when fresh flowers are involved!

flower jar

I’ve probably seen it a hundred times before, but while in my father-in-law’s office last week, I really studied this gorgeous picture of our house circa 1980.  At that time, the house was white with black shutters, and I think it’s stunning!

Charles and I have been busting our butts lately over at the house.  We prepped and primed the master bathroom walls a couple of weeks ago in time for our appraisal.

But it hasn’t been all work.  We’ve been having a little fun too.  We went to our local Pig in the Park event a couple of weekends ago and made it to a wedding last Saturday.  (You can see the dress I’m wearing here.)
