Closet Organization with Sharpie

This shop is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group® and Sharpie, but all my opinions are my own. #pmedia #EverydaySharpie http://my-disclosur.es/OBsstV

For the past few months, we have loved our renovated closet and the organization system we put in. There’s only one problem…the striped bins are up too high for us to know what’s in them! With summer coming to an end and fall on the horizon, I thought it was the perfect time to take our organized closet to the next level.

Last week I swung by our local Walgreens and picked up a few Sharpie products, including the Stainless Steel Pen.  The pen comes in a variety of colors, but I decided to stick with the classic black and add in color with some homemade labels.

I picked up some scrapbook squares and decorative tape at our local craft store and created some pretty simple but cute labels.

For the bins on my side, I made labels for Winter Scarves, Summer Scarves, Swim, and Sweats (how’s that alliteration for ya?!)  For Charles, I made labels for White Tees, Gray Tees, Red Tees, and Blue Tees.

Then I just clipped the labels to the bins with the cutest little clothes pins.

I loved using the Sharpie Stainless Steel pen for this project.  It writes incredibly smooth, and was the perfect choice for this project. Plus, the pen is super comfortable to write with!

Next project?  I’m tackling our makeshift kitchen pantry bins!

Layout Love

When we first laid out the formal living room, we were in a rush to just get things unpacked and staged for the appraisal so we didn’t put a lot of thought into it.  But the longer it sat, the more and more I disliked this once-favorite room.

But last week it quickly became a favorite again! I’m loving this new layout that centers the seating area around the decorative fireplace and leaves our extra large bay windows fully in view.

IMG_5446 IMG_5443 IMG_5444 IMG_5445 IMG_5777 IMG_5774 IMG_5450 IMG_5448

It’s not perfect, but I’m loving it more and more. There are still a few things left to do…add drapes, paint the green chair navy, and add crown molding. But for now, it’s a room that I’m proud of.

Decorating With Magazines

Magazines.  It’s a problem.  It’s an addiction.  There should be a Magazines Anonymous.  I could be the leader.

Real Simple, Southern Living, Garden & Gun, Martha Stewart Living, Traditional Home, House Beautiful, Veranda, Better Homes & Gardens…seriously. It’s embarrassing. Who needs all of these?! And this doesn’t even include the ones my mother-in-law brings over when she’s finished thumbing through! (In fairness, many of these were gifts and/or free subscriptions through various promotions.)

Maybe if I cancelled a few most of my magazine subscriptions I’d actually have a bit more to spend on decorating, but I’m just a print kind of girl. Don’t get me wrong, I looove Pinterest (I mean, who doesn’t?!) and all of the instant inspiration available out there, but there’s just something about flipping through a mag while I eat my cereal in the morning that makes me happy.

So, instead of crying into said cereal about not being able to afford to completely decorate our oversized space, I’ve decided to just decorate with my beloved magazines.

Dining Room Paint Reveal!

After much debate, we finally decided on a color for the dining room a few weeks ago.  PURPLE!! This is so far from my neutral-loving comfort zone, but I couldn’t be happier with the results!

IMG_5703

Charles cut in the top of the room and I rolled everything else.  We went with Classic Violet by Valspar above the chair rail and Kitten White by Glidden (the same as the foyer) below the chair rail.  Just like the rest of the house, we did all of the trim in a stark glossy white.  We felt like the Classic Violet had enough color to make a statement, but enough gray in it to not be overkill.

This dining room has come a long way from when we found it.

So what’s left, you ask?  First of all, this room is in serious need of some decorating. We need an extra large buffet to take the place of the smaller sideboard we have now, plus a big mirror or art piece to hang above it.  We need at least 2 more dining chairs, and I’d like to bring in something completely different at the heads of the table.  Kind of like this, but in colors that work for our room.

The floors need to eventually be refinished, and I plan to get a new rug for this space.  But $100 for a 9×12 neutral rug was hard to pass up!  It definitely does the job in the interim.

Oh yeah, and those big huge windows need some treatments in a bad way.  But they’ll just have to wait for now. Home girl is out of money. But you can see a bunch of my favorite inspirations here!

The Dedicated House

Rearranging

Now that we’ve officially been living in our house for about 3 months, we’ve pinpointed a few things we love and a few things we don’t love about the current state of our house.  One of those things is the furniture layout in certain rooms…particularly the formal living room.  So, on a random Monday night, we decided to get going on a little rearranging.

We moved the piano out of the living room and into the foyer.  Now before all you musicians go telling me this is not the place for an instrument such as a piano, hold up. Neither of us play, and the piano is really just a sentimental item for us.  Plus, this is the only place for it right now. So that works for us.

I centered up the rug in front of the fireplace and moved the couch to the far wall opposite of the bay windows. The wingback chairs, which will be painted navy soon, are going across from the couch. There’s still A LOT to decide on, but it’s a start, and I’m already happier with the outcome. Plus, I can’t wait to get started on my gallery wall above the couch!

The rest of the room, however, is a complete and total wreck.

While we were at it, we moved a few things around in the newly painted dining room as well.  Here’s a sneak peek — the full reveal is coming soon! (Please excuse our dirty floors…the painters don’t like to wipe their feet!)

Laundry Room Inspiration

UPDATE: Here’s the latest on our laundry room.

Our laundry room has come a long way from where we found it.  The paint, plaster, and vinyl flooring were in seriously bad shape, and the floor beneath the vinyl was completely rotted through in the corner due to a leak.

before july 13.2 july 13.3

We pulled up all of the vinyl floor, cut out the rotten wood in the corner, and basically laid a new sub floor.  Then we tiled the floor, and installed a drain in the center.  The drain was easily some of the best money we’ve spent…the first time we used our washer it flooded, but no big deal — we had a drain! No floor damage! If you’re thinking of reflooring your laundry room, I would highly recommend installing a drain!

We installed our new washer and dryer, and the room has pretty much been sitting like this for the past few months.

IMG_5697 IMG_5698 IMG_5700

Pretty boring, right?

The ceilings are 11 feet tall in this room, so we definitely plan to install some cabinets above the washer and dryer.  And a countertop is a must.  The room isn’t very large, so more folding space would be great.  I’d also like to replace the cheap, hand-me-down Ikea shelf with a pull-out drying rack.  Here are a few ideas I like (click on the photo for source).

You can see all of my laundry room inspiration here.

This room doesn’t currently have a door.  The old door was pretty beat up, so we removed it.  Since you basically have to be standing in a cooking spot to be able to see into the laundry room, we’ve gone door-less for a while.  We can’t seem to decide between a bi-fold door, a solid door, french doors, or a partial glass door.  I would have loved a pocket door or sliding barn door, but it just won’t work with the walls in this space.  Here are a few of my favorite options…
