DIY No-Sew Outdoor Curtains

I’ve always loved curtains on a porch. They just seem to soften the edges and make the exterior feel more like an actual room and extension of the interior. But when I looked for outdoor curtains for our porch makeover, they seemed to all be really expensive, especially since I needed panels at least 9 feet long.

So what do you do when you can’t afford fancy curtains? You DIY!

I had heard that drop cloths make good outdoor curtains. The canvas material is made to hold up well against the elements, and the cotton is still soft and breathable. Here’s how I made our curtains:

Items needed:
6×9 foot drop cloth
1/2-inch PVC pipe cut to length
4 hooks
Ring clips for 1/2 inch rod

1. Cut the drop cloth in half. Obviously the size of the drop cloth depends on your porch, but 3×9′ panels were just what we needed.

2. Add ring clips to each panel. I used 1/2 inch ring clips, about 12 per panel for stability.

3. Install the hooks and nest the cut PVC “rods” inside. I used 1/2 inch PVC pipe and cut two 3-foot sections at home. Quick tip: to smooth the cut edges of the pipe, rub the end on the corner of a rock or brick.

That’s it! So easy! No sewing required.

By the way, thanks to my handy husband for climbing up on a ladder 25 feet in the air on our sloping porch. I promise to not make you do it again…for at least a few months!

I also added a ribbon to tie the panels back when needed. I’m on the lookout for a really cute tassel, but you could use just about anything to get the look.

Tory Burch’s Southampton Home

It’s been over 3 years since Vogue first shared a peek inside Tory Burch’s home, and I’m still as in love with it as I was then! This Southampton manor, built in 1929, boasts 25 rooms, sunken tennis courts, a basketball court, a pool, a skateboard ramp, and an outdoor pizza oven. What’s not to love?!

What do you think? Would you live here? (Hint: the answer is either “yes” or “I’m an idiot.”)

Traditional Meets Mid Century Modern with Chairish

I think it’s safe to say that our interior design style is traditional. Ultra sleek modern just isn’t us, nor would it fit the style of our house. But who says that you have to choose between traditional and mid century modern? You can have both! That’s why I jumped on the wagon when Chairish asked me to share how I would style some mid century pieces.

I decided to head for the dining room for a little wow factor. Here’s the inspiration piece I chose:

It’s definitely out of my comfort zone, but I really love this abstract. I’ve been drawn to blues and greens lately…maybe it’s that spring is here and I like these more cheerful colors. Here’s how I pulled the space together:

I went with a traditional dining table and vintage walnut buffet. The minute I saw these chairs on Chairish, I knew I had to have them in this room. From there, I added some gold (you know me!) in the sconces, sunburst mirror, rug, and accessories. Lastly, I added a little extra drama with the emerald drapes. A little traditional, a little mid century. What do you think?

What’s your style? Are you more modern or traditional?

Green Inspiration For St. Patrick’s Day

I hope you’re ready to be overloaded with GREEN!! St. Patrick’s Day is tomorrow, and while I don’t have fancy green cocktails or yummy green treats to share, I do have LOTS of green interiors to fill you up!

You may remember that I shared some red inspiration around Valentine’s Day, and admitted that red is not my favorite. Green is a different story! I love green! One of our guest bedrooms is green and it always feels fresh and cheery.

There are two basic ways to bring green into your home…

#1: Go all out! Paint some walls. Add some wallpaper. Go crazy!

#2: Add some pops! Incorporating green into your home design doesn’t have to feel forced or overwhelming. Just add a few pops of green here and there to spice up a neutral space.

Still not sure green is your thing? Add in a plant or two and see how you like it!
