It’s been a while since I’ve shared an interview with a designer. Let’s jump back in with the fabulously talented Jana Bek of Bek Design!

Jana has a pretty impressive design resume and has worked for Macy’s, Henri Bendel, and One Kings Lane, to name a few. Jana has an eye for color and a brilliant knack for mixing patterns. If you’re looking for light, airy, colorful design, then Bek Design is for you!

When and why did you decide to become a designer?

I started off in merchandising and product development in the fashion industry, working for the likes of Macy’s and Henri Bendel. While I loved the experiences, the fast turn of fashion trends left me wanting to create something beautiful that had more staying power. So that’s what peaked my interest to become an interior designer; creating a beautiful space that could be enjoyed for years as opposed to months.

What has been your greatest challenge as a designer?

In the beginning, which I think is true for most designers, it’s building up your portfolio and getting your name out there. Now, I’d say my biggest challenge is, with some of my clients, it is the first time they are ever critically thinking about the aesthetic they want to achieve, and helping them navigate and think through their wants married with their needs can prove challenging.

How would you characterize your style?

I would say practical with personality. I love neutral foundations, investing in well-made, beautiful, classic items, then layering on color and pattern with accents and art. I also love pieces that are versatile so I have the option to switch things up. For instance, side tables acting as bedside tables, accent chairs that have enough gravitas to act as accent chairs in a living room but could later serve as chairs for a dining room.

Does your personal home fit your design style?

Very much so. Classic neutral foundations with pops of pattern and color.

You also offer E-Design services. What are some of the benefits? What are the drawbacks?

I’m currently not taking on new E-Design client’s…I’m actually consulting full time helping companies with their social media strategies. Between that and my brushstroke lamp business, I don’t have the bandwidth. That said, I love working with clients all across the country who have very different styles and design needs. The biggest drawback is often I don’t get to see the after photos, or when I do, it’s tricky or too costly to get the spaces professionally photographed.

Where do you find your inspiration?

Definitely from the amazing designers I follow on Instagram, Pinterest, and trade magazines.

What was your first paid design project?

After I worked for Caitlin Wilson of Caitlin Wilson Design, she would refer any E-Design clients to me as she didn’t have the bandwidth to take on with her successful textile launch. It was a blessed way to start my design career.

Who has been your greatest professional influence?

I’ve been fortunate to have many amazing women as mentors in my career. If I had to pick just one, I think it would have to be Caitlin Wilson. Working with her gave me the courage to launch my business, and later launch my product line. Dina Battipaglia from my time at Henri Bendel is an amazing mentor as well; so smart and always empowering her team.

What is your favorite design era?

I think I’m mixing eras but Palm Beach meets Hollywood Regency is my jam. Bright, happy, glamorous – a bit too much!

What’s at the top of your bucket list?

I want to travel more soon. Not amazing but something I need to prioritize.

What do you have coming up next?

I just launched my metallic brushstroke lamps which I’m thrilled about. I hope to launch a larger version this year as well as offer them internationally, starting with Australia. I’ve gotten an amazing response from AU and I’m dying to visit. I’m never been!
