It’s finally here! Reveal day!! It’s time to show you what I’ve been working on over the past 6 weeks in the One Room Challenge.
If you’re not familiar, the One Room Challenge is an event hosted by Linda at Calling It Home and House Beautiful where 20 designers make over a space from start to finish in just 6 short weeks. You can catch those designers each Wednesday, and the rest of us link up on Thursdays. I did my first Challenge last Spring and my second last Fall.
For this challenge, I’ve been working on giving our staircase and upstairs hallway in our 1902 American Foursquare a makeover. We bought this family home out of foreclosure three and a half years ago and spent about 18 months straight bringing it back to life. You can read our full story here, and you can find our home tour (along with lots of step by step renovation details) here!
This is what our staircase and upstairs hall looked like when we started. Notice the lovely green trim, the crumbling plaster walls, and the 1970s gold carpet. Yikes!
And here’s what this space looked like just 6 weeks ago…
The stairs really needed some love, and the whole space in general just needed a little bit of liveliness. I think we hit the mark. Here it is now!
I couldn’t be happier with the runner. It looks great, and feels even better! The plush feel and sophisticated look add an element of richness that this space was really needing.
We also set up a little welcome area in the back hall leading into our guest room…magazines, water, chocolates, coffee, wifi password. All the essentials!
Next week I’ll be sharing more details, behind the scenes looks, and the next steps. Be sure to come back! For now, here’s a few sources:
stair runner • rug • pink abstract print • blue abstract print • feather print • lamp • plant • gold vase • guest room basket
I’ll leave you with a few before and afters…

A huge thank you to my friend Jacqueline Kannan for photographing this space!
Love, love, love…what an amazing transformation! The landing area looks so fresh and I’m obsessed with the runner & rug choices. Well done!!
GORGEOUS! So proud of you. It looks incredible.
Sooooo much better! What a lovely staircase you guys have now. Nice work, Sarah!
Lovely transformation. The runner is so much nicer than full carpet for the stairs…love the stained steps with white risers. Very Nice. :)

You knocked it out of the park baby! Fantabulous!
What an amazing job. I know how much work stairs are, and yours looks so great now!
Love that you left some of the wood showing. It gives it such character. Love the nail head trim on the mirror too! Geat touch. All this in six weeks? Whew!
