How is it already Week 5 of the One Room Challenge?! As usual, this 6-week makeover challenge is flying by!
If you’re not familiar, the One Room Challenge is an event hosted by Linda at Calling It Home and House Beautiful where 20 designers make over a space from start to finish in just 6 short weeks. You can catch those designers each Wednesday, and the rest of us link up on Thursdays. I did my first Challenge last Spring and my second last Fall.
For this challenge, I’ve been working on giving our staircase and upstairs hallway in our 1902 American Foursquare a makeover.
A while back, we looked at carpet samples for our runner, which was tons of fun. And also stressful. Picking something that you want to last for a really long time carries a lot more weight than picking out a throw pillow or lamp. We narrowed it down to these choices…
And the one we chose was…
We loved the neutral yet interesting Cotillion pattern in “marble” by Stanton. I think the geometric pattern will keep it from being too boring. Plus, we needed a pattern that could be cut at a 45 degree angle at the landing on the stairs. It was a little pricier than we originally planned, but after a lot of research, we decided that the durability that the polypropylene offers was worth the cost. We hope to get a couple of decades out of this thing!
We will be coming in just under the wire, with the carpet being installed next Monday morning. This weekend I’m going shopping for rugs for the upstairs halls, and I’ll be working on hanging art, setting up our guest room station, and styling the spaces. The fun part!
You can catch all of the updates so far here…
I can’t wait to share the reveal with you next week!
Be sure to check out all of the amazing designers’ projects too! You can find the “all stars” here and the guest participants here!
Great choice! Excited to see the reveal. :)

I never would have thought to re-do a staircase as an ORC project-what a great idea-its a space you are in like a million times a day! Looking forward to seeing the final look!
Sarah this is amazing!! You must be so happy with your new staircase! I can’t believe what a transformation you completed in just 6 weeks!
