Who doesn’t love Craigslist? I routinely check in just to see what’s out there. I have a running list I keep on my phone for pieces I’m trying to find…night stands for the master, a new chair for the den, a big round table for the foyer, end chairs for the dining room table. So when I saw a beautiful vintage china cabinet in excellent condition in Raleigh, I had to go see it. I think I was in the house all of 30 seconds before I said, “I’ll take it!”
We added this china cabinet that I found at an estate sale to our dining room a few months ago, and have really loved it. We thought we wanted another one in the dining room for more storage, but as soon as we put this one in there, it just looked too cluttered. It competed too much with the fireplace and just made the room feel too full. So instead, we decided to make it a display case in our foyer. Now you see it right when you walk in the front door!
With Craigslist, you never really know what you’re going to get. But when we pulled up to a large pink (yes, pink!) house in a plush neighborhood, I knew we were going to find something great. We bought the china cabinet from the sweetest old couple. They were moving out of their house into a much smaller house, and were trying to get rid of most of the things in their house.
It actually broke my heart a little bit that their multiple children didn’t really want to claim anything. The woman was very emotional about getting rid of the cabinet. She said it had been her grandmother’s from the 1940s and was very special to her. I showed them a few before and after photos of our house and told them our story, and I assured her that we would take great care of her china cabinet in our “forever home.” Cue the waterworks!
But y’all won’t believe what they were selling it for…$136!! Why the random number? I have no clue. We actually saw it one day and came back the next to bring it home. I paid a deposit on the first day, and the sweet old man actually gave me a “receipt.” I’m keeping it in the drawer of the cabinet as a reminder of where it came from.
Have you found anything good on Craigslist lately? What’s on your list?
Such a sweet story – so glad the cabinet has a wonderful new home with you. Craig’s List? I found a lovely antique oak dining table with pedestal base that I use for a sewing table. $100. Perfect. I do more selling than buying on Craig’s List…nothing has ever been posted for more than one hour before it’s gone. It always amazes me. Happy Hunting.

Love the blue and white as well…in fact, I have that same egg!! :) I also happen to be a craigslist junkie! As someone just taking a first leap into blogging about a restoration project, which is a bit scary, I’m always inspired by what you have accomplished. Your home is beautiful.
