A Classic Look with Durable Siding

While helping out with the tour of my in-laws’ house this week, I heard several people make the comment that a brick house is a lot easier to maintain than a house with siding. I’ve never owned a brick house, but I’m guessing they’re probably right. After less than 3 years, we’ve already got lots of paint peeling off. We’ve basically accepted that we’ll have to have our house painted about every 10 years. But because we did our restoration in such a way that we could get our state’s historic tax credits, we had to keep the original materials.

Now don’t get me wrong. I love love love our house. And those tax credits (worth 30% of our total restoration cost) make a huge difference. But I can’t help but wonder sometimes if going with a more durable material would have been a better choice.

We actually used HardieBacker cement board to replace siding on the lower edges of our garage, where there was a history of rot. Water tends to run on and under those boards when we have heavy rain, and because they don’t get much sunlight, the original siding would never really get dry, which led to rot. With the Hardie board, we don’t have to worry about that.

  1. Siding is a vital part of a home’s exterior. In fact, if you do not choose the right material for siding your house is not that strongly built. Choosing the correct exterior options for your home will determine how long your home will stand to the elements as well as the look of your home and your homes energy consumption.

    1. If you’re looking to improve the look of your home without the painting, vinyl siding is a popular, affordable choice. Many homeowners and builders choose it because it’s long lasting, durable, inexpensive and relatively easy to install and maintain. Vinyl comes in a variety of grains, thickness and colors making it also a practical choice for many homeowners.

  2. Great post on the benefits of James Hardie siding! I can definitely relate to the issue of paint peeling and the need for frequent repainting on a traditional siding. It’s great to hear that Hardie products are specifically engineered to withstand the elements and come with such impressive warranties. I also appreciate the mention of the HardieBacker cement board for the lower edges of the garage to prevent rot. The before and after image really showcases the transformation and aesthetic appeal of Hardie siding. Overall, it sounds like a durable and cost-effective solution for homeowners.
