Did you enjoy Part 1 of the Hillwood Estate tour yesterday? If you missed it, click here to see the exterior and first floor of our tour of Hillwood Estate in Washington, DC.
I’ll give the same disclaimer that I gave for Part 1 of the tour, just in case: I took a gazillion pictures. And by gazillion I mean like 300. No joke. This place was amazing. However, all photos were taken with my iPhone, so the quality may not be top notch. Anyway, here we go.
The entire estate is so grand, and the staircase leading from the foyer to the upstairs is no exception. Filled with 18th-century French and Imperial Russian art and portraits, this staircase is anything but ordinary. And the herringbone floor pattern is to die for!
The library is a cozy room with wood walls and darker accents. You might notice the gown in this room…this dress was labeled “lounge wear.” We’ve come a long way to yoga pants!
This closet attached to the kids’ room definitely gave me some inspiration for our master closet. It’s about the same size, and I love the built-in cabinets with space for hanging, as well as drawers and countertops.
This twin bedroom is absolutely gorgeous. The soft blues and mix of different textures and patterns is spot on. It reminded me of these bedrooms…twin beds aren’t just for kids!
Side note: I love the Do Not Disturb plaques on the bedroom doors.
The master suite is stunning. Seriously. Jaw on floor. You know I love some pink and gold, and this bedroom really delivers. It’s always interesting to me to see how other people choose to lay out a room. I would not have picked this configuration, but it’s totally working. (PS – there’s another “lounge wear” gown.)
In fashionable contrast to the pink, the vanity room is decked out in soft blue accents. And a fireplace, of course. The bathroom is mostly pink, but not in a 70’s way; in a fabulous way. Pink and gold marble? Yes please! As you can imagine, the multi-room closet doesn’t disappoint either. The metallic wallpaper adds just enough shine without being overpowering.
The estate sits on several acres in a wooded area, and you honestly feel like you are in a remote mountain setting up there. In actuality, the estate is just 5 miles from downtown DC.
The huge greenhouse is filled with gorgeous plants. On the very cold day that we visited, the hot and humid greenhouse was a nice reprieve.
One of my favorite parts of the tour was the display of dresses. Several rooms in the house included examples of the dresses that owner Marjorie Merriweather Post wore in those spaces, but there was also a complete exhibit with actual clothes that she wore. She was a fashion icon and DC socialite, and her wardrobe proved it. (If you haven’t noticed, she also loved to have her portrait painted.)
Well that wraps up the tour. I hope you enjoyed it! If you’re in the DC area, I would highly recommend that you go check out the Hillwood Estate & Museum. It’s definitely worth the trip!
All-in-all spectacular but that Wedgewood fireplace…oh, my.

Not sure if you’re into gardening but if so you have to come back in the spring or summer to capture pictures of the beautiful gardens. You just inspired me to schedule my own tour.
Thank you for the wonderful tour across Hillwood estate!
I’m wondering what camera was used for taking these excellent pictures?
