In a lot of ways, Charles and I have followed in his parents’ footsteps. Back before Charles was even born, my in-laws bought a severely neglected historic house (just a few blocks from ours) and spent about 2 years restoring it. It’s the only home that Charles has ever known, and it’s beautiful inside and out.
My mother-in-law, Rhonda, has great taste, and the house is always decorated for each and every holiday and season. One of my favorite rooms in this 1922 house is the dining room…it’s right off the foyer, with double doors, built in china cabinets, and a stunning chandelier. But most of all, this room is an example of patterned wallpaper done right!
Rhonda absolutely loves her wallpaper, and hasn’t grown tired of it since it went up 30 years ago, which is really saying something. Talk about staying power! But one of her biggest obstacles is the rug.
Because of the bold and colorful print on the walls, she feels that a rug with too much pattern or varying colors will look too busy. So today, I’m bringing the question to you: What kind of rug would you put in here?
I have my own ideas, but I’ve learned through blogging that readers often throw out ideas that I would not have even considered, so I’d love to hear what you think! What would you do for a rug in this space?
I’ll be sure to update you later on which way we decide to go. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts!!
Oh, and by the way, how pretty is her fall tablescape?
I think I’d go with a mostly solid color rug in a coordinating color from the wallpaper. I think the beige looks like a carpet sample. Or maybe a “speckled” looking one with a few colors from the wallpaper. It’s hard because the wallpaper is soooo bold.

you can’t go wrong with a sisal rug in a dining area! it would be neutral and looks great with anything.
I agree, a sisal would be perfect –something that goes better with the warm tones in the wallpaper. But, you may be able to find just the right sunwashed Turkish with a tone-on-tone (subtle) pattern. Hunt that down, would ya?
P.S. Tell Rhonda I love her Thanksgiving table.
I would say a mostly solid color rug to match the wallpaper, or maybe dainty stripes in a similar color?

I’d be really tempted to try stripes. I think the modern look of bold stripes would go along with the cheerfulness of the wallpaper colors but also bring it up-to-date. I like the Dash & Albert Birmingham red stripe. A trellis in green would work as well, but the trellis feels more stuffy to me where as the stripe feels more fun.
What wonderful wallpaper. These are all useful comments – I think I would go with a solid of a color from the wallpaper. Seeing Rhonda’s home helps to explain why you hit the husband jackpot. How could he be anything but splendid being raised there.

I love her Fall Tablescape. She’s a woman after my own heart! I think neutrals look nice but a bit plain for such a vibrant space. I’d do a solid rug in one of the colors she has in her wall paper. I’d be so bold as to do a muted orange, perhaps. But then again, I live along the coast and have lots of color in my home, too!
