My Next (Dream) Project: The Crabtree Jones House

My brother sent me the link to this house for sale in Raleigh, NC yesterday, and I was immediately smitten. He knows me so well. If only I had the money…or the time…or the desire to put my marriage through one of these again!! Ha!

The Crabtree Jones House is very likely the oldest home still in residential use in Raleigh. It was recently moved 700 feet to a prime ITB location. And for the cool price of $299,000 it can be yours!

The Jones family owned the house all the way up until 1973 when it was sold for development. The house consists of several additions to the original structure, including a porch. Dating back to the 1970s, the Junior League of Raleigh, the North Carolina Community Foundation, and Preservation NC each tried to acquire the property on site for nonprofit use, but nothing ever worked out. The Crabtree Jones House found itself situated in the midst of highway development, and was finally moved from its 14-acre lot in early 2014.

That sleeping porch alone could be amazing! So many possibilities for someone who has lots of money to pour into this diamond in the rough. Preservation NC estimates that the restoration will cost $400,000-500,000. Silver lining: because this house is registered as a Raleigh Historic Landmark, property taxes are reduced by 50%! Enough to make you consider it? Who’s up for a challenge?!

You can keep up with this house on Twitter, and you can find the virtual tour here! This one not doing it for you? There’s plenty more to choose from!

Which house would you choose?

  1. What a beautiful home! That is so great that they didn’t tear it down or just let it fall into total ruin. Hopefully someone buys it and gives it lots of love :)

  2. Wow, totally amazing house! If only I had the money to buy it, I would. I imagine it renewed and how fun the process of renewing it could be…Lets keep dreaming. Dreams are free of charge ;)
