Last week I revealed the “after” shots of our master bathroom. We have done a lot of work and made a lot of changes to our historic home, but this bathroom is by far the biggest change. At one time, part of the upstairs of the house was a separate apartment. Our master bedroom was the living room, our office was the bedroom, and our new master bathroom was the kitchen. In houses as old as ours, you virtually never get big bathrooms and big closets. But since we knew this would be our forever home, and we really had no need for a kitchen upstairs, we decided to go all out and completely rethink the space. Here’s a drawing of our blank slate.
And here’s the option we landed on. (You can see all of our options here.) So, without further adieu…our master bathroom renovation! What we’ve finished:
- Remove kitchenette cabinetry and sink
- Remove hot water heater
- Remove vinyl flooring
- Close up pantry door (became part of the closet wall)
- Repair plaster where necessary
- Install tile floor in herringbone pattern
- Build a water closet for the toilet
- Install new toilet
- Install tile and glass shower
- Install refinished pedestal tub from the office bathroom
- Install vanity
- Install vanity sconces, vanity mirrors, lights, and ventilation fans
- Prep, prime, and paint walls, trim, and ceiling
- Hang blinds
What’s left:
Install new overhead light(update!)Install vanity hardware(update!)- Add rugs and mats
- Add built in linen closet
We put the palm in the bathroom for our open house to help fill the empty space in front of the chimney, but eventually we’d like to add a built-in unit for linens. Maybe something similar to this or this. To see my inspiration for this bathroom, look here! The figures…this room is 11′ x 15′ with 10′ ceilings. There are 2 windows, 2 interior doors, 1 chimney (no fireplace) and 1 exterior door leading to the upstairs porch. Be sure to check out these other Room By Room Recaps:

So. Much. Work! But what an impressive transformation. The end result is really stunning and I love the final layout you decided on.
The whole space is amazing but I’m crazy for that floor. And I love that you kept the old light.
First, let me start by saying that you are an inspiration. Purchasing an older home to redo is my life dream. Add a large piece of woody land for my two boys to explore, a spot for a horse and I am all set!
The layout you chose is great and there were elements that I wouldn’t have thought of! Creating a space from a blank slate is no easy task. GREAT idea to keep the toilet on it’s own. :) The tile… oh my – I love the tile! The large sink / cabinet is dreamy as well. Soooo much space!
Thanks so much for your sweet comments, Nikol! :)
OH MY GOODNESS. Amazing doesn’t even… The transformation, the love and the care you are giving these walls is so awesome. Love watching the process. :) It’s like Blogging Renovation Realities :)
Thanks for stopping by, Ann! So glad you enjoyed the makeover! :)
I just picked my jaw up from the ground. This transformation is truly amazing! Bravo to you for taking your vision and turning into something spectacular! I’d love for you to share this at my Creative Ways Link Party that goes live on Wednesday evenings at 8pm central. Hope to see you there!
Blessings,
Nici
WOW! what an amazing transformation and I love all of it. I want a tub like yours!
Wow! I am kind of speechless! The transformation is overwhelming and amazing! I love the style you chose. I am glad that you were able to reuse that door for the toilet room and those fantastic, chunky baseboards! :) Kudos and high five to incredible work! :D
Thanks, Julie! We did our best to come up with a modern bathroom while still using the traditional design elements found in the rest of the house…like the moldings and doors. Glad you enjoyed it! :)
This is amazing. Love all the white tiles. So clean and fresh. It was great you took all the before pictures because the transformation is unbelievable. Great job!
Oh my gosh, there are immeasurable hours of blood, sweat, and (maybe) tears that went into this bathroom, right?! You had such a great vision and made some amazing design choices – just love it!
Oh yeah, LOTS of tears!! But it was all worth it. :)

OMG!! What an amazing transformation. This looks fabulous. I love those mirrors. Thanks so much for linking this up at The Southern Special.
What a huge renovation project! I love the results. Were you able to salvage the old kitchen cabinets? They looked hand crafted. I bet your home is relatively the same age as ours-looks to be anyway. Thanks for sharing at Fridays Unfolded!

Thanks, Alison! We loved those cabinets and definitely held on to them. We hope we can use them somewhere, even if it’s just in the garage or attic later on.

Very impressive. I see you got a glimpse of the history of flooring. We did too when we redid our old house’s kitchen. I really like the lighting arrangement. We put one fixture in the middle and it’s hard for me to get good light for make up. Wish we had been so smart! It really turned out fabulous! Happy Thanksgiving, Linda

Furniture and embellishments in modern bathroom designs often follow the style’s general aesthetic. Seats or seats might be cut from top notch wood and will display the trademark combination of points and streaming bends so often found in modern furniture.
Wow! The result is fantastic! Amazing makeover.
