A Little Bit of History

If you’ve been following for a while, you may know that our house is not just any house.  It’s special to us because it’s part of our family.

The short version: Charles’ father’s parents bought the house in 1939 and both lived there until their passing.  When Charles’ grandmother passed away in 2003, the house was sold, and in 2012 the house went into foreclosure. In 2013, we bought it!

So to say that the house has sentimental value to us would be an understatement.  Charles’ father grew up in that house.  Charles’ parents lived in that house while Charles was just a bun in the oven.  Charles spent Christmases, Thanksgivings, Easters, and countless other occasions celebrating in that house.  And now it’s a part of us too, and will hopefully be the house where our kids and grandkids also celebrate.

When we bought the house, our new neighbor and good friend gave us this marble plaque that he had so thoughtfully removed from the house before it was cleared out after foreclosure.  As you can see, it commemorates the date that the “original Gaylors” moved into the house: Nov. 29, 1939. That’s 75 years folks!

We haven’t decided where we want to put the plaque yet, but I know we’ll display it proudly.  And don’t worry, I’ll be sure to let you know! ;)

  1. So awesome…. hardly any homeowners have “history” with their homes. As we’ve known for some time, this is special. Your daddy loves you!

  2. I love that you and your husband were able to buy the house his grandparents lived in and where he has so many memories. What a blessing that is and a wonderful way to display it with the marble plaque.

  3. Sarah,
Tradition and honoring the people who have come before us is extremely important to me. Your story touches me as to how you earned the house back for your family. I love that the neighbor saved the piece of marble with the date engraved to commemorate the home purchase. I wish you a life filled with joy and happiness in your home.

  4. Love this! When I was a little girl, my favorite place was my grandmother’s house. Unfortunately, her children didn’t value it & now it’s lost to us. Savor what you have! Blessings!

  5. Visiting via the no rules link up. I love the idea you are blogging about the house and plan to live there while creating more family history. Nice to come across someone with a longer term view..

  6. How sweet and thoughtful.

Funny enough its a very similar story about the house we live in. My husband actually grew up in this house until he was 13, then they moved out of it out into the country. My father-in-law has kept it and only rented to family. And now we are living here, many years later. While we don’t officially “own” it, we basically do.

    1. Family homes are the best, Angie! I’m glad y’all are getting to live in one of your own! :)
