Striking Out

Do you ever get in a rut? You know, that feeling where nothing is appealing and everything just seems off.  Well that’s been me lately…when it comes to shopping.

I know, I know.  #firstworldproblems. But as my online shops on Etsy and Hunter’s Alley pick up speed (yay!), I’ve become more and more picky about what I want to stock.  I guess that’s a good thing? Maybe?

Over the weekend I visited 5 antique shops and, for probably the first time ever, left all 5 empty handed. I snapped a few photos (excuse the quality of Mr. iPhone) of some pieces that stood out to me, but I just couldn’t commit.

That last chair didn’t seem all that special, but it did have a matching one, so that was somewhat appealing.  I think I may have to go scoop up those nautical glasses, even if just for myself.  I could make an argument for all of these–some more than others–but just couldn’t pull the trigger on any of them.

So here’s that point in the conversation where you give me some advice.  Should I have snatched any of these?  What do you do when you get in a buying rut…or a rut of any kind for that matter?

There’s still time to vote here!

  1. Lots of fun things my baby-blues are seeing! #1 photo: medium size bookcase (heavy?) is great. Needs a clean up, + paint. #3 pic: bottom right …. wow, love this old-fashioned picture! Collecters items for me. Brass drum mini table is cute. Nautical drinking glasses are so-so. Ok, if your style. A few items in background = interesting. Gotta keep lookin! One never knows what treasures can be found. Ha! Chairs look sturdy. Big greenish-yellow certainly is comfy. Most likely, must all be recovered. These days I/we are downsizing. Trying anyway. Too many “things” in this huge house of ours. Neighborhood sidewalk sale coming up!

    1. Thanks for the input, Marcee! We have too much “stuff” too, and need to do some cleaning out. But shopping for my shops is just too fun! :)

  2. Love the nautical glasses, the lamp, and the etagere! I’m the same way and try to buy only what I truly love…but I try to think ‘what are the people shopping on HA/etsy looking to buy’ and that usually persuades me one way or another :) So much easier to buy if the prices are right too!

    1. Thanks Brittany! I try to look at “what sells” and not just what I love. Hopefully the two overlap! :)

  3. I’m very undecided on the bamboo. If it were a lighter finish, I might like it more. I think it would take some “spot-on” styling to keep it from looking like cheap clutter.
The lamp is a no-go. Too small, you’d have to invest in a different shade. I just don’t see anyway to get your money back there.
The next ones depend on price, but I’m thinking mirror – yes, brass stool/table – yes, glasses – yes, plant stand – yes, etagere – yes.
I can’t get excited about the lines on either of those chair, so I’d leave them.

    1. I’m with you on the bamboo…the trend is really hot right now, but can look cheap if it isn’t done right. And the shade on the lamp is definitely bringing it down. Thanks for weighing in, Amanda! :)

  4. I have that issue from time to time too. Usually I take a break (2 weeks maybe) of not going to any stores and then things seem a bit more exciting when I go back out. As for your latest finds, I think that brass garden stool was great. And I’m with you on that last chair – although a pair of anything is always a great find. And chintz is coming back big and bad. Once they had a good cleaning they might be really desirable to someone.

    1. A break is a good thing every now and then. That’s probably where I’m at right now.

    1. I know…I might have to go grab it. It’s been there for a few weeks so I can probably haggle. ;)
