Welcome to the first installment of the Room by Room Recap series! Let’s kick things off with the formal living room!
I immediately fell in love with the formal living room the minute I saw it. It was dark and dingy, but had SO much potential. And that light fixture! It came from my father-in-law’s side of the family and actually predates electricity.
Here are a few pictures along the way, including the few months that this room became the storage room. (Some of the pictures were taken with a very old iphone, so the quality isn’t all that great.)
What we’ve finished:
- Repair plaster walls and ceiling
- Repair/replace broken storm windows
- Repair window ropes
- Clean tile fireplace
- Prep, prime, and paint walls and ceiling
- Prep, prime, and paint mantel and trim
- Paint fireplace inlay and cover
What’s left:
- Refinish floors
Furnishing and decorating
I’d like to get two formal wingback chairs to go opposite the sofa, and I plan to switch out the coffee table and end tables. I’d also like to get new shades for the vintage crystal lamps. And of course I need a rug BAD! You can see my inspiration for this room here.
The figures… the room is 13′ x 17′ with 11′ ceilings, has 4 windows, 3 interior doors, and 1 fireplace.
Update: You can see how we rearranged and decorated this room here!
Even though I have been able to see it at every stage, one word suffices….”AMAZING”. Well done ma’am!
Thanks, Dad! :)
Oh my! There are so many fun things you can do with this room! I just love it!

That room was in some seriously rough shape at the start but you could tell it had loads of potential! It is truly amazing how far it has come – I am so envious of your fireplace (gorgeous!) and that light fixture. Such a cool space Sarah!
Thanks, Kris! That fireplace is my favorite in the whole house, and I about died when I heard the story of the light fixture. I love that it has such a special family meaning.
