Closet Suggestions Needed!

Hi friends!  I’m in need of some suggestions for a storage system in our master closet.  Because the walls are plaster, we don’t want a system that is only supported by the walls.  We would like something that can be attached to the walls for extra support, but is mostly free standing.

Eventually, we’d like to add custom built ins, but for now we are just looking for a budget-friendly alternative.  Got any suggestions?  Let’s hear them!

Note: The closet is about 7′ wide by 10′ long.

  1. pax wardrobes from ikea? For mine I’m probably going the cheap route and screwing boards onto the walls and then setting other boards onto them for shelves. Yours isn’t nearly wide enough for the clothes bars to span the whole room though so I think the wardrobes would be the easiest way. I think they’re super cheap without the doors, too.

      1. It worked for the house I grew up in! Trouble is I don’t see any way to do the clothes bars without wall mounted brackets. But then, you could use those on plaster if you screw right through into the studs. But then you could combine these, too. The clothes bars themselves (and a shelf over each) would be super cheap and exactly where you want them, or at the stud closest to that point.

  2. Check out expedit closets (bookcases from ikea) on Pinterest. They’re economical but also very functional. For the time being you could even do those with rids for hanging and then check out the elfa systems from the container store! We love ours!!! And every January they go on sale 40% off!!
